Rehabilitation and Revitalization of the Historic Medina of Fez, Morocco. (The World Bank, 1996 – 98)

The historic Medina of Fez is listed as a Heritage of Mankind site. It is one of six historic centers selected for pilot initiatives by UNESCO and The World Bank.  A strategy for the rehabilitation of the non-monumental historic environment was developed in collaboration with ADER-FES, the local agency entrusted with the planning of the medina. A contingent valuation of the rehabilitation of the city's cultural heritage was undertaken as part of a rehabilitation strategy.  Detailed surveys highlighted the potential contribution of residents and business owners to investment in rehabilitation.  Options for public-private partnerships in revitalization efforts were also outlined.  The World Bank has funded a 5-year rehabilitation project.  The revitalization strategy was highlighted in a New York Times article of August 18, 1998.
