Research Associate
As a research associate at the Institute for International Urban Development, Erick Guerra conducts research and coordinates research studies for the Institute's capacity building and technical assistance programs in Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. His work at the Institute has included investigation of the impacts of migration and remittances on land and housing in Sub-Saharan Africa, and he coordinated the Institute's study on migration, investment in Senegal, where he led fieldwork, Kenya and southern Africa. He also conducts research on socio-economic trends and cross-border regional planning in North Ireland and the Republic of Ireland for the Institute's partner organization, the International Centre for Local and Regional Development.
Erick graduated with distinction from Harvard University Graduate School of Design with a Master's Degree in Urban Planning in 2007. In addition to his studies, he chaired the student housing group, TAed micro-economics, served on several student boards, and facilitated the Greater Boston Affordable Housing Development Competition as a student coordinator. He was a 2006 Rappaport Fellow and has worked in the planning departments for the cities of Somerville and Cambridge. Erick holds a BA in Fine Arts and French from the University of Pennsylvania and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Gabon from 2002 to 2004.
In addition to the Institute, he currently works as a Teaching Associate at Harvard University Graduate School of Design for two graduate level courses, Methods of Urban Planning and Analytic Methods of Urban Planning, where he delivers coursework on population, economic and land use projections, research methods and statistics. He has been a guest lecturer and served on studio reviews for graduate urban planning and landscape architecture courses, as well as the Career Discovery Program. His research interests focus on the intersection of transportation systems, land markets and land use in emerging and industrialized cities.
