The Board of Directors provides the Institute with linkages to the professional community interested in sustainable urban development. It supports the Institute’s action research initiatives and its participation in such international networks as the UN-Habitat Best Practices and Local Leadership Program (BLP) and Global Research Network on Human Settlements (HS-Net); the UNESCO Cultural Heritage and Development Network; and the Microcredit Summit. These activities are essential to the Institute’s ability to influence urban development policy and integrate timely issues into its International Training Programs.
The Board consists of individuals sharing an interest in shaping a sustainable urban environment. Members help define the Institute’s mission and define activities that generate cutting-edge ideas to improve the planning and management of urban areas. They serve for renewable three-year periods and make an annual contribution of $10,000. A portion of the Board constitutes an executive committee with direct responsibility for Institute activities.
The Board has two annual meetings each year at a location where the Institute is active. Two additional meetings of the Executive Committee occur each year in Cambridge to which all Board members are invited. Each meeting focuses on a thematic issue: research activities conducted by the Institute, emerging trends in urban management and governance, innovative best practices documented by the Institute. Recent meetings were held in Alexandria (Egypt) Kars (Turkey) and in Ireland.
